Empire Enterprises’ greatest threat comes when Hakeem forms an alliance with Lucious’ ex-fiance Annika who is possibly helping a rival record label. Wrapping everything together is Cookie’s power struggle to get the piece of the company that is deserved. As the second season of Empire is surely set possibly break more viewership records, DX is proud to present the next edition of “Empire State Of Mind.”

Empire State Of Mind: Does "Empire" Get Battle Rap Right?

The dramatic breakdown of the Lyon clan continued as tensions between Empire Enterprises and The Dynasty grew significantly when Hakeem destroyed a peace offering from Lucious via USB drive. This lead the family patriarch to instigate a beef between recent signee Freda Gatz and his youngest son. Gatz sends the first shots during a concert at Lucious’ club making allusions to Hakeem’s recent kidnappings and luxurious upbringing. Social media goes crazy of course. Ironically, Hakeem’s first response is through Snapchat? Attempting to prove his dominance, he challenges Gatz to a rap battle featuring some ludicrous production values while Cookie and Lucious make a back-end bet over the winner.
In a previous episode introducing Gatz’s battle rap abilities, gunfire erupted after a fight when things got too personal. Hakeem seemed out of his league. Besides the hilarious training sequence where each member of the contestants’ entourage threw out random words for them to freestyle to, the actual scene between the two artists couldn’t have been more over-the-top. And yes, Funkmaster Flex served as the host and DJ for the event in the most obvious allusion to Hip Hop’s biggest beef of 2015, Drake Vs. Meek Mill. Empire’s first season featured the cringe-worthy moment where Jamal sung his way through a battle. Yes, Empire predated Mill “getting bodied by a singing nigga.”
This particular battle reached outrageous levels normally seen in anything involving Cadalack and Daylyt. Everything from choreographed dancing to crowd participation created an ambiance that was more Broadway than anything featured on King Of The Dot Entertainment. Despite the dramatics, events don’t make sense in reality. The show presents Hakeem as a huge major label rap star. In reality, there’s no way anyone in his position would have taken that chance. Matter of fact, it wouldn’t have even been worth the effort against someone unknown like Gatz. The best rap beefs from Drake vs. Mill and Nas vs Hov to Biggie vs. Pac featured greats almost at their prime. In reality, a rapper in Hakeem’s position would've simply ignored any attacks. However, the real winner of the night was Pepsi who managed to involve themselves in the actual storyline of Jamal getting an endorsement deal from the soda maker. By the episode’s conclusion, Empire may have set a new precedent for having using endorsements within the narrative structure of an episode.

Future Announces New Album At Made In America

While thanking fans for their support during his performance at this year’s Made In America music festival, Future announced that he will be releasing another album this year.
“We appreciate all the support. Y’all been turning up for us. It’s gonna be another album on the way before the year is out with. Just know we ain’t stopping,” Future said during his performance.
The announcement of a new album comes weeks after the Atlanta, Georgia rapper released his most recent project, Dirty Sprite 2.
According to Complex, in addition to the newly-announced project from Future, fans can also expect his Mike WiLL Made-It-produced mixtape Ape Shit in the near future.
Future’s Dirty Sprite 2 album was released on July 17. Upon its release, the album went on to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Eminem Lyrics Post Leads To Teenager's Arrest

A 15-year-old boy was arrested for terrorist threats Monday (August 31) in Fresno, California after school officials alerted police of an Instagram post with Eminem lyrics, The Fresno Bee reports.
The sophomore reportedly posted lyrics to Eminem's song "I'm Back" that reference the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado that left 15 people dead.
"I take seven kids from Columbine, stand ’em all in a line, add an AK-47, a revolver, a nine, a MAC-11 and it oughtta solve the problem of mine" the post read. "And that’s a whole school of bullies shot up all at one time. I’m just like Shady and just as crazy as the world was over this whole Y2K thing."
San Joaquin Memorial High School, the school where the suspect attends, and St. Anthony’s Catholic School, where the student previously attended, cancelled classes yesterday (September 1) in light of the reported threat.
Police say that there were multiple factors to create alarm, such as the boy's mother died, that he broke up with his girlfriend, that he quit the football team and that he was not performing well in school. He was described as a "loner" and "socially awkward."
"These are really all of the things we look for in individuals that historically have been involved in incidents like Columbine," Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer said in a press conference. "So we’re very fortunate that this was brought to our attention."
Law enforcement obtained a search warrant for the suspect's home and found multiple firearms, ammunition and a bulletproof vest. The student and his father said they were unaware of the guns, which were unregistered. The father, who has an active restraining order against him, could face weapons charges. Police confiscated the weaponry, as well as the student's iPad and cellphone.
The family lawyer, Linden Lindahl, said that the student is not the boy that law enforcement is portraying him as. The suspect is claiming he was hacked.
"He was cooperative," Lindahl said, according to ABC 30 Action News."He spoke with the officers. Denied being bullied. Denied posting the Instagram."
The teenager is currently in juvenile detention.

Jay Z & Timbaland To Testify In "Big Pimpin" Lawsuit

Court documents were filed yesterday (August 10) in the lawsuit over the rights to the sample in Jay Z's song "Big Pimpin'." In the documents, both Jay Z and Timbaland are scheduled to testify in the case, which goes to trial October 13, Billboard reports. Timbaland produced the song.
Osama Ahmed Fahmy filed the lawsuit in 2007 against Jay Z, Timbaland and outlets who used the song for promotional purposes. Fahmy is the nephew of Baligh Hamdy, who composed "Khosara, Khosara," which was identified as the track sampled in "Big Pimpin'."
When the song was released in 1999 on Jay Z's Vol. 3 ... Life and Times of S. Carter, Timbaland paid $100,000 to clear the sample with EMI Music, who said it owned the rights to the song via a deal with an Egyptian company in conjunction with an agreement from Hamdy's family.
Fahmy says that because the artists did not get the consent from the author of the original song through his family according to Egyptian law, any use of the song would be unauthorized.
"The evidence will also show that the defendants did not obtain the consent of the author or his heirs to introduce modifications in or additions to 'Khosara Khosara,'" the plaintiff statement reads. "Therefore, any license to economically exploit 'Khosara Khosara' in 'Big Pimpin'' would be null and void."
Jay Z, Timbaland and the defendants state that the use of cultural customs does not apply to United States law and that they used the sample legally.
"Throughout the course of this litigation, Plaintiff has consistently tried to make this a case about so-called 'moral rights,'" the statement reads, "complaining for example that under Egyptian law, authors and their heirs can always refuse to permit use of a composition in manners deemed to be 'objectionable,' regardless of whether they previously gave up all of their economic rights in connection therewith. This Court, however, already has properly determined that moral rights have no application in the United States, and cannot support Plaintiff’s copyright infringement claims."

Master P Weighs In On Lil Wayne & Birdman Beef

Master P says that he hopes Lil Wayne and Birdman can make amends.

50 Cent Says Cars & Jewelry Are Not His During Sex Tape Court Appearance

50 Cent testified in court today (July 21) and described his finances to a jury who will decide if he has to pay punitive damages to Lastonia Leviston for posting a sex tape of her, Page Six reports.
50 says that the cars and jewelry that he displays in social media are not his.
"It’s like music videos," he says. "They say action and you see all these fancy cars but everything goes back to the dealership."
The rapper says that he owns three gold chains and wears a plastic Casio G-Shock watch, not a diamond-studded Rolex.
"The Hip Hop culture is aspirational," he says.
50 Cent says that his net worth is around $4.4 million, not $155 million as Forbes reports.
He admitted that he owns a 21-bedroom home on 17 acres in Connecticut and that he receives six digits for various appearances.
The report says that 50 apologized to Leviston, who was seated in the crowd. He says that the competitive nature of the Rap game caused him to post the tape of her. Leviston has a child with Rick Ross.
"I’m sorry if you feel like I hurt you," 50 Cent says.
50 was supposedly all smiles as he gave his report to the jury, which consists of four women and two men.

A jury decided today (July 10) that 50 Cent must pay $5 million to Lastonia Leviston for posting a sex tape of her, Daily News reports.
The rapper must pay damages to Leviston, who has a daughter with Rick Ross, for two counts. The first is for violating her civil rights by posting an image of her without her permission. The second is for intentional affliction of emotional distress. Each count is $2.5 million.

Rick Ross’ baby mother, Lastonia Leviston appeared in a New York City court earlier this week to speak on the personal damage, which resulted from rapper 50 Cent allegedly putting a sex tape featuring the woman on his website.
Leviston is currently suing 50 Cent over the release of the sex tape, which the Queens, New York lyricist says he did not make public.
According to XXLMag.com, during her appearance in court on June 15, Leviston stated that the release of the video caused her emotional damage.
Additionally, Leviston’s lawyer, Philip Freidin informed jurors that 50 Cent gained a great deal from the release of the sex tape on his website. According to Freidin, the video brought extra traffic to a site where the rapper sold merchandise, concert tickets, and music.
It was previously reported that the sex tape brought in over 3 million views on YouTube.
50 Cent’s lawyer, James Renard attempted to denounce Leviston’s claims in courts, stating that “Her life is better because she filed this lawsuit against Rick Ross’ rival.”
In addition to Leviston’s lawsuit against 50 Cent, 50 is suing Rick Ross. According to the rapper, the Maybach Music Group founder is the one responsible for the sex tape leak.

Tyga Sued For Starting New Clothing Line

Tyga is being sued by a lady who claims he stole her concept for a clothing company and started his own. According to report, Tyga and Chuon Guen Lee created the Last Kings clothing line in January of 2013, and she says he was suppose to promote the line and get it in to a popular store called Tilly’s. Lee is now saying the rapper didn’t do what he promised, and he even ran off and got another partner to start another clothing line with a very similar name called Egypt Kings!?

Joe Budden Disappointed With Nicki Minaj's Comments Regarding Him

After hearing the response Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj had to his comments on his I'll Name This Podcast Later, Joe Budden says he thought Nicki was smarter than that.

Chris Brown Victim Of Home Invasion

According to reports from Fox News, Chris Brown was the victim of a home invasion.
The incident took place at Brown's residence in the Tarzana area of the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County before 2 am PST today (July 15).
Three armed men reportedly barged their way into Brown's estate while the singer was at a nightclub.
TMZ reports his aunt was actually present during the whole ordeal and was held at gunpoint until being forcibly locked away in the closet.
This is the "Loyal" singer's second run-in with a home invasion this year.
In May, he had to deal with a female intruder found naked in his bedroom inside his home in Agoura Hills, California.

Young Thug Arrested For Making Terroristic Threats

Atlanta artist Young Thug was arrested this morning (July 15). The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reports that the “Lifestyle” rapper was taken into custody for allegedly threatening to shoot a Perimeter Mall security guard in the face and is being charged with making “terroristic threats.”
The publication says that the artist born Jeffrey Lamar Williams and a mall security guard got into a dispute on July 7. According the arrest warrant, Thugger threatened the security guard while being escorted from Perimeter Mall.
Jim Joyner of the US Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force says Young Thug was arrested this morning at 6 am in Sandy Springs, Georgia. He was booked into the Dekalb County Jail and is currently awaiting his bond hearing.

DMX To Serve Six Months In New York Jail

According to a news report from Buffalo, New York’s WIVB, DMX will spend the next six months in the Erie County Holding Center in Buffalo.
The Yonkers, New York rapper was placed in the holding center on Tuesday (July 14) of this week to serve time for a family court ruling.
The Guardian reports that DMX’s sentence stems from the 44-year-old musician not paying $400,000 in child support. He was initially arrested in late June prior to a performance at New York City’s Radio Music Hall.
The news report from WIVB states that DMX’s sentencing comes at a time when the rapper has managed to garner “a history of crime in Erie County, including over child support and traffic violations.”
In April of this year, DMX and his entourage were accused of robbing a man of $3,200 and holding him at gunpoint at a Newark, New Jersey gas station. After being approached by TMZ about the incident, he stated that he didn’t recall any incident taking place at the gas station.
“I wouldn’t even be on the cameras,” DMX said while speaking with TMZ in April. “We stopped at a gas station. I don’t recall any incident happening. I make way more than that doing a show. So, why would I want that type of trouble for myself…The harder the devil works at trying to destroy me because I’m special to God.”

Suge Knight pleaded not guilty to murder at a follow-up arraignment Thursday (Apr 30th), and he got a July 7th trial date. According to Knight’s lawyer, they feel like if Floyd Mayweather beats Manny Pacquiao, Floyd will be covering his $10 million bail?

“My understanding is that Suge is going to be bailed out this coming week,” lawyer Matthew Fletcher told the Daily News outside court.

Nicki Minaj Was Once On The Run For Attempted Murder, According To 7even Up

Prior to joining Lil Wayne at Young Money Records and releasing three studio albums, Jamaica, Queens rapper Nicki Minaj was a member of the Hoodstars rap group, along with former boyfriend Safaree Samuels, Lou$tar, and 7even Up.
7even Up recently spoke with Forbez DVD Radio about the group, his relationship with Nicki Minaj, and more. In regards to his relationship with Minaj, the rapper revealed that shortly after she linked with Young Money, she pretended not to know who he was.
7even Up made another bold reveal during the interview when he stated that Minaj was once on the run for attempted murder.
“When I saw her she acted like she didn’t even know me. That’s how I felt,” 7even Up said, according to AllHipHop.com. “I was like at least acknowledge me. It hurt more than anything…Sometimes people give you money to get rid of you. So now I can’t say she didn’t do nothing for me. I didn’t even wanna take the money. Prior to speaking on being ignored by the Young Money rapstress, 7even Up recalled the early days of Hoodstars. According to the former Hoodstars member, Minaj “wasn’t even rapping” when the group was first formed.
“She literally wasn’t even rapping at the time,” he said. “She just started out like that day prior. We met and we knocked out a record that day. And then Safaree came along…She’s always been aggressive and hands on. And I ain’t with it. It was more like a brother/sister relationship. You know who we used to get compared to? Da Band. Making The Band…We just grew apart, man…We all had our issues. Me? I couldn’t stay outta jail at the time. So, that was my downfall. Nicki used to mess up all the time. We’ll be doing shows. Jay Z, Eminem & Drake Listed On Billboard's Top Money-Makers List

Billboard has published its list of the highest paid musicians of the year and the first Hip Hop artist on the 2014 edition is Jay Z at #9.
The publication reports Jay Z's total estimated revenue in 2014 at $22 million built up from $1.2 million in sales, just over $19 million from touring, and less than a million dollars each in publishing and streaming. Notably, Beyonce comes in just a few spots down the list at #12 with an estimated revenue of $19.6 million. Beyonce put up higher dollar amounts than her husband in each of the categories except touring where she earned an estimated $14.8 million.
Eminem clocked in at #20 with the "highest streaming royalties on this list" and the second highest publishing, according to Billboard. Thanks to a joint-tour with Rihanna, Em netted $5.2 million in touring and on his own made just over $4 million from music sales.
Despite not releasing an album last year, Drake found himself at #21 with an estimate total revenue of $10.6 million, largely built up from $7.7 million in box office sales.
Rihanna managed to make the list herself at #32 after showing up at #20 last year.

Lauryn Hill Misses Nigeria Performance, Issues Apology

Lauryn Hill did not perform in Lagos, Nigeria Friday (May 1) at part of May Day Live as scheduled, according to a post on the rapper-singer’s Facebook page.

"We are disappointed to report that we will not be performing at tonight's concert,” Hill wrote on her Facebook page Friday. "From our end, we did everything we were supposed to do, including waiting at the airport for many hours, ready to fly out and share the evening with you. Unfortunately, after much effort, the promoter was not able to get all of our travel arrangements taken care of. This prevented us from being able to fly into Nigeria in time to make the concert. We were all very excited to come, and very disappointed that we couldn't make this one. HOWEVER, we are working to reschedule our appearance ASAP.”

Hill says that the promotor told her that tickets for the event will be honored when the date is rescheduled.

Dr Dre Wins Digital Rights To "The Chronic"

A federal judge ruled yesterday (April 20) that WIDEawke Death Row Records does not have the right to profit from digital sales of Dr. Dre's seminal debut album, The Chronic.

Since Dre (born Andre Young) has not been compensated appropriately for the online sales of the album, U.S. District Judge Christina Snyder ruled in favor of the producer-rapper.

Dre's attorney, Howard King, clarified the ruling with The Associated Press, stating that although Death Row may no longer sell The Chronic digitally, other entities can sell the album, but Dr. Dre is to receive 100 percent of the proceeds from online sales.

Dre sued the revitalized record label he helped found in the mid-'90s last year, citing several missed payments as the reason for the lawsuit. At the time, Dre alleged that he was owed more than $1.2 million in unpaid artist-producer royalties, $1.1 million from digital sales and more than $600,00 for mechanical royalties.

"For years, Death Row Records forgot about Dre when they continued to distribute his music digitally and combined his hits with weaker Death Row tracks in an attempt to elevate the stature of their other artists," King wrote in a statement. "We are gratified that the federal court has unambiguously declared that Death Row has no right to engage in such tactics, and must hold all proceeds from these illicit distributions in trust for our client."

Waka Flocka Flame officially announced his presidential candidacy Sunday (April 20) via Rolling Stone.

Flocka, who pledged to run two years ago, says he will be running with DJ Whoo Kid as his vice president in the 2016 election.

Unlike some other politicians, the rapper has no problem identifying specific policy changes he'd like to see.

"The first thing I'ma do when I get in office," he says in his campaign announcement video, "is legalize marijuana."

DMX was reportedly talking to a man at a Newark, NJ gas station when someone from his crew threatened the guy with a weapon and demanded all of his money. The reports claim the guy pulled out $3,200 and DMX grabbed the money and they dipped.
Allhiphop reports that the victim was able to snag one of the four Cadillac trucks license plate information before DMX and his crew drove off, but no arrest have been made.

Ice Cube Discusses Making N.W.A "Straight Outta Compton" Movie Without Easy-E

Even though N.W.A’s material was released on Eazy-E’s Ruthless Records, the rapper-businessman passed away in 1995 due to complications from AIDS and, thus, was not involved in the forthcoming N.W.A biopic, Straight Outta Compton.

Nonetheless, Ice Cube, who was a member of N.W.A with Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, MC Ren and DJ Yella, says that it seems as though Eazy-E was involved in the film, which is slated for an August 13 release. 

"Working on the movie, it’s like we’ve been engulfed in Eazy-E for the last seven years,” Ice Cube says during an interview with XXL. "So, it seems like he’s right here still.”

As for the story that will be depicted in the film, Ice Cube says that the narrative is one that has universal themes. 

"It’s an American story of not only rags to riches, but David vs. Goliath,” he says. "To me, when you talk about N.W.A, you talk about non-violent protests against things that we were trying to comprehend, so we ended up putting it in song. There should be a movie about us.”
